MINIMALLY
INVASIVE SPINE
SURGERY

In addition to performing extensive 360-degree decompression
and fusion operations of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar
spine, SDNSI neurosurgeons have developed and refined skills
encompassing the burgeoning field of minimally invasive spine
surgery (MISS). Simply stated, this new field strives to compensate
for a problem with minimal soft tissue injury, and thereby
bringing more rapid recovery. In particular, MISS techniques
are suited for the treatment of chronic pain syndrome often
encountered in the workmens compensation population.
Below is a listing of the MISS procedures being performed
by SDNSI neurosurgeons and their corresponding target patient
groups.
- Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET Procedure) "for
chronic low back pain"
- Coblation Nucleoplasty "for chronic low back pain."
- Endoscopic Pedicle Fixation "for selected low back
pain patients with single level spondylolysis and/or spondylolisthesis."
- Spinal Stimulator Insertion "for chronic refractory
lower extremity pain syndromes."
- Intrathecal Pump (morphine/baclofen infusion) "for
failed back syndrome, painful spasticity."
- Balloon Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty "for traumatic
osteoporotic and neoplastic compression fractures of the
thoracolumber spine"
- Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy "for posttraumatic
RSD pain and hyperhidrosis"
- Spinal Epiduroscopy "for direct visualization
of nerve root condition and precision steroid delivery in
the previously operated lumbar spine"
- C2 Dorsal Root Ganglionectomy "for cervicogenic
(whiplash pattern) headache/chronic neck pain"
- Cervical Interbody Cage Fusion "for eliminating the
need for hip grafting in the treatment of radicular arm
pain"
Please note that procedures #1,3,6,7,8 and 10 require additional
specialized training in order to become a certified practioner.
SDNSI Neurosurgeons have fulfilled these requirements as specified.
At the present time, we do not consider artificial disc prototypes
to be a more reliable alternative to more standard spinal
procedures. (Please see "NEWS" section)
