TRAUMA
 Traumatic
injuries to the nervous system, including head injuries and
spinal injuries, are unfortunately prevalent in our society.
These injuries can be mild or severe, resulting in death and
severe neurologic injury. They are usually associated with
various mechanisms of trauma, such as assaults, motor vehicle
accidents and falls among others. The special needs of these
particular patients with injuries to the brain, spine, and
spinal cord often require immediate intervention by a neurosurgeon
trained to deal with these injuries as well as the subsequent
management of the patient in the hospital.
Traumatic injuries to the brain sometimes require surgery.
In addition, they can require specialized aggressive management
in the ICU (intensive care unit) to allow for survival and/or
recovery from these injuries. Spine and spinal cord injuries
also fall within the realm of the neurosurgeon with specialized
training in these areas, both surgical and nonsurgical. The
neurosurgeons at SDNSI are experienced and highly trained
to deal with all of the aspects of traumatic injuries to the
nervous system. In
addition to being available and "on call" at the
major trauma centers in San Diego, we have had additional
training in caring for these patients during their potentially
long ICU courses. In addition to the above, one of the neurosurgeons
at SDNSI has undergone a specialized fellowship in neurosurgical
critical care and trauma, making him the only neurosurgeon
in San Diego County to have had this specialized instruction
and training.
The outcome for patients with traumatic injuries relies heavily
on the expertise, experience, and knowledge of the neurosurgeons
caring for them. This and more are provided for by the neurosurgeons
at SDNSI. When entrusting your family members care to
one of the neurosurgeons at SDNSI during these crucial times,
you can be assured that they are receiving the best possible
care that medical science can offer.
